Summer School: Flowers and Pollinators

The Summer School: Flowers and Pollinators will take place form 13 to 16 September 2016 in Naples. The course is organised by the Phenology and Life Strategies Group of the Italian Botanical Society and is hosted by the Department of Agricultural Sciences of the University of Naples Federico II.

	Aim

The main aim of this course is to acquaint the participants with functional aspects of plantpollinator interactions to be applied when management decisions are to be made for biodiversity conservation.

	Objectives

The main objective is to make all participants familiar with the key aspects of functional flowerpollinators interactions in practical and applied manner. This course will provide participants with scientific knowledge and practical methods for the measurement of insect-mediated pollination.

	Background

Most flowering plants depend to some degree on the pollination service provided by animals to produce fruits and seeds. Nowadays the need for active conservation of pollination interactions is increasingly solicited. Plant-pollinator systems are affected by anthropogenic sources, including fragmentation of habitat, changes in land use, modern agricultural practices, use of pesticides and herbicides, and invasions of non-native species.

Workshop: What can CAP greening measures do for pollinators and pollination

A Super-B workshop "What can CAP greening measures do for pollinators and pollination?" will take place th September, in Cluj, Romania

The Common Agricultural Policy will be reviewed in 2017, and revised from 2018 onwards. Through this workshop Super-B aims to produce a policy briefing note, summarising scientific knowledge on how compulsory greening measures can benefit pollinator communities and pollination services. Before the workshop, we will be gathering data on the implementation of the greening measures across Europe, so that we can start to analyse their actual impact on pollinators.

The Center for Pollinator Research at Penn State University will be hosting the third International Conference on Pollinator Biology, Health and Policy from July 18-20, 2016. The conference will be held at Penn State’s campus in University Park, PA.

A major theme of this year’s conference will be translating the results of recent research advances in the biology and health of pollinators into solutions that can be applied in the field to conserve and expand pollinator populations. The conference will cover a range of topics in pollinator research, from genomics to ecology, and their application to land use and management, breeding of managed bees, and monitoring of global pollinator populations. Recent global initiatives in policy, education, and extension will also be highlighted.

The conference will be preceded by a one-day Pollinator Conservation Short Course hosted by the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation on Sunday, July 17, 2016. The Short Course will also be held at Penn State in University Park, PA and it will feature presentations on creating and protecting pollinator habitat, as well as related research of Penn State scientists. Aim?

We aim (i) to provide a global overview on the Systematics and the Ecology of European bees including the up-to-date methods; (ii) to train to recognize the morphology of the main European genera by using keys; (iii) to collect wild bees in the field with standard technics (net, pan trap, aspirator); (iv) to prepare a collection of pinned specimens.

THE BEE COURSE is designed primarily for botanists, conservation biologists, pollination ecologists, and other biologists whose research, training, or teaching responsibilities require a greater understanding of bee taxonomy. It emphasizes the classification and identification of more than seventy bee genera of Europe, and the general information provided is applicable to the global bee fauna. Lectures include background information on the biology of bees, their floral relationships, their importance in maintaining and/or improving floral diversity, inventory strategies, and the significance of oligolecty (i.e., taxonomic floral specialization). Field trips acquaint participants with collecting and sampling techniques; associated lab work provides instruction on specimen identification, preparation and labeling.
