15 Trainees from 15 different countries studied bees in Malta last week under the supervision of Denis Michez, Nico Vereecken, Stuart Roberts, Achick Dorchin and host and teacher Mario Balzan.

	While very successful, unfortunately, this was also the last training school within the Super-B project.

STSM's Call Open: An opportunity for early stage researchers, particularly PhD's and Postdocs

	Deadline STSM's: 31 July 2017!

	Short-term scientific missions (STSM's) are exchange visits between researchers involved in a COST Action, allowing scientists to visit an institution or laboratory in another COST country. They are aimed at fostering collaboration, sharing new techniques and infrastructure that may not be available in other participants' institutions or laboratories. STSM are intended especially for young researchers.

Note: Every STSM has to take place between 15 August 2017 and end before 20 March 2018.

	Special addition to the call

	Because this is the last possibility for STSM's in this COST Action, we also want to advertise STSM's that would really help contribute to the goals of the different working groups (see end of this call). If you're interested in the advertised STSM's, please contact the person listed with it.

	What you need to do to reply to this call?

	Please encourage young researchers to use this opportunity and let them fill in this document online and submit it before the 31 of July. To do so you need to create an e-cost profile if you don't have one already. You can register on the same page. Our action number is FA1307. Besides filling in this document online, please send the following documents to both the STSM coordinator prof. Ahmet Murat Aytekin (aytekinahmetmurat@gmail.com) and the chair prof. Koos Biesmeijer (koos.biesmeijer@naturalis.nl) with the Super-B address in cc (super-b@naturalis.nl):

	· a copy of the COST form you submitted online

	· a motivational letter (max 400 words)

	· CV

	· List of publications

	· Detailed work plan for your STSM

	· Supporting letters from your supervisor at home and the host supervisor on your STSM location

	After 31 of July, the STSM coordinator and the core group will evaluate all those who applied. As soon as all applications have been reviewed we will let you know who will receive an STSM grant.

	The rules

	Please read the rules conncected to an STSM grant as written down in the COST Vademecum carefully, starting on page 30. You can read there what you can and cannot receive reimbursement for.

An important point: Every grantee must submit a report of the STSM to the coordinator of the STSM (cc to the chair) within 30 days after the end date of the STSM. Failure to submit the report will result in cancellation of the grant!
The report should contain:

 Short (half page) summary of the report

 Purpose of the STSM;

 Description of the work carried out during the STSM;

 Description of the main results obtained in light of the objectives of the SUPER-B action;

 Future collaboration with the host institution (if applicable);

 Foreseen publications/articles resulting from the STSM (if applicable);

 Confirmation by the host institution of the successful execution of the STSM.

	The length of the report should not exceed 5 pages. The summary of the report will be posted on the SUPER-B web page once the report is approved by the coordinator of the STSM and SUPER-B chair. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask!

	WG 1&2 Crop and region specific pollinator management recommendations. Management recommendations for functional groups of different crops and/or different regions would be developed based on Kleijn (2015). Delivery of crop pollination services is an insufficient argument for wild pollinator conservation and Garibaldi (2015). Trait matching of flower visitors and crops predicts fruit set better than trait diversity. The output would be a publication. The STSM candidate would visit Mike Garratt (Reading Uni ). This would complement earlier work in WG2 to progress tasks "Assess variability of main pollinators across different crops and regions" and "Compile information on pollinator management practices".

	WG 4 To determine whether managed and wild bee populations respond differentially to drivers of decline. The STSM would dive into the overlap of Epilobee, COLOSS data and red lists. People involved: Peter Neumann: Spatial and temporal patterns to honey bee decline in Europe, Stuart Roberts: The European red list of bees: gathering the data, Denis Michez: Spatial and temporal patterns to wild bee decline in Europe.

	WG 4 To explore new mechanisms for detecting stress in wild and honey bees

	This STSM would consist of a literature review of genetic markers to a variety of stressors. A mechanistic understanding of interactions among stressors with Orlando Yañez.

	Super-B organized a Training School in Cyprus in March. This was an European Bee Course where 20 students (from 16 different countries) learned to recognize and identify different bee species. The course was organized by Denis Michez with help of Menelaos Stavrinides and Androulla Varnava from Cyprus. Trainers of this course were Denis himself, Nico Vereecken, Stuart Roberts and Achick Dorchin.

SuperB identifies actions to 'future-proof' pollinators

	The following text is taken from this BBC Environment web page, author: Helen Briggs

	International scientists are calling for action to "future-proof" the prosperity of pollinating insects, birds and mammals.

	They say agricultural expansion, new pesticides and emerging viruses present the biggest risks in coming decades.

	And the bats that pollinate plants in tropical and desert climates need legal protection, they report in PeerJ.

	Some 35% of global crop production and more than 85% of wild flowering plants rely to some degree on pollination.

	The research took a horizon-scanning approach to identify future issues of concern over the next three decades.

	Threats and opportunities

	"At the moment with pollinators, it's always about mitigation...we're always playing catch-up," said Prof Mark Brown of Royal Holloway University of London, who led the research.

	"The world is changing very fast, agricultural practices are changing, the way humans live is changing and that could unleash a whole range of future opportunities for pollinators but also threats to them," he added.

	"By looking into the future - by horizon-scanning - we hope to identify those, to actually enable policy and practice that grows as those changes occur, and so rather than trying to go back and fix a problem we stop the problems from happening in the first place."

	The study by 17 scientists, government researchers and NGOs identified six main issues:

 Corporate control of agriculture at the global scale - with a small number of companies controlling land use, there are opportunities to protect pollinators but concerns that homogenous land use could damage diversity

 A new class of insecticides known as sulfoximines (for example, sulfoxaflor) - the researchers say these must be tested for sub-lethal affects on wild pollinators

 Using bees other than the honeybee to pollinate managed crops - this may have advantages, but risks need to be assessed

 Effects of extreme weather/climate change

 Reduced chemical use outside agriculture - opportunities to build on this on a larger scale for the benefits of pollinating insects.

	The experts said consolidation of the agri-food industries was the single biggest threat to pollinators.

	"This homogenisation of agricultural practices effectively means that corporates are applying blanket production systems to landscapes that are vastly different, significantly reducing the diversity and number of native pollinators," said Sarina Jepsen, deputy chair of the IUCN bumblebee specialist group.

	However, the study also highlighted positive opportunities for protecting pollinators, such as reducing chemical use in gardens and parks or by working with corporations on management strategies.

	Lynn Dicks of the University of Cambridge, a co-researcher on the study, said identifying environmental issues in advance, before they became large scale, allowed society to plan responses and reduce environmental risks.

	"Many of the pollinator issues we identified on the horizon can be responded to right now, for example by working with corporations already controlling large areas of agricultural land to develop pollinator management strategies, or by planning research on the sub-lethal effects of sulfoxaflor before it is widely used," she said.

	The research was funded by the EU-funded Super-B network.

STSM's applications open until 15 Aug 2016: An opportunity for early stage researchers,

	Application for STSM's is open until 15 August 2015, providing and opportunity for early stage researchers, particularly PhD's and Postdocs. Every STSM has to take place between 10 September 2016 and 30 April 2017.

	Young researchers are encouraged to use this opportunity. To apply they have to fill in a document online and submit it before 15 August. To do they need to create an e-cost profile if you don't have one already. (Super B action number is FA130)

	Besides filling in this document online, the following documents should be sent to both the STSM coordinator prof. Ahmet Murat Aytekin (aytekinahmetmurat@gmail.com) and the chair prof. Koos Biesmeijer (koos.biesmeijer@naturalis.nl) with the Super-B adress in cc (super-b@naturalis.nl):

 a copy of the COST form you submitted online

 a motivational letter (max 400 words)

 CV

 List of publications

 Detailed work plan for your STSM

 Supporting letters from your supervisor at home and the host supervisor on your STSM location

	After 15 August, the STSM coordinator and the core group will evaluate all those who applied. As soon as all applications have been reviewed we will let you know who will receive an STSM grant (probably after the MC meeting on September 6th).

Failure to submit the report will result in cancellation of the grant
The report should contain:

 Short (half page) summary of the report

 Purpose of the STSM;

 Description of the work carried out during the STSM;

 Description of the main results obtained in light of the objectives of the SUPER-B action;

 Future collaboration with the host institution (if applicable);

 Foreseen publications/articles resulting from the STSM (if applicable);

 Confirmation by the host institution of the successful execution of the STSM.

	The length of the report should not exceed 5 pages.

	For more information: super-b@naturalis.nl

Article Alert: Do not divide count data with count data; A story from pollination ecology with implications beyond

	A new article published in PLOS ONE takes pollination ecology as a case study to discuss good and bad practises in analyising ecological data.

	Abstract:

	Studies in ecology are often describing observed variations in a certain ecological phenomenon by use of environmental explanatory variables. A common problem is that the numerical nature of the ecological phenomenon does not always fit the assumptions underlying traditional statistical tests. A text book example comes from pollination ecology where flower visits are normally reported as frequencies; number of visits per flower per unit time. Using visitation frequencies in statistical analyses comes with two major caveats: the lack of knowledge on its error distribution and that it does not include all information found in the data; 10 flower visits in 20 flowers is treated the same as recording 100 visits in 200 flowers. We simulated datasets with various "flower visitation distributions" over various numbers of flowers observed (exposure) and with different types of effects inducing variation in the data. The different datasets were then analyzed first with the traditional approach using number of visits per flower and then by using count data models. The analysis of count data gave a much better chance of detecting effects than the traditionally used frequency approach. We conclude that if the data structure, statistical analyses and interpretations of results are mixed up, valuable information can be lost.

	The workshop Policies for Sustainable Pollination in Europe was a key step in the dissemination work programme for Super-B. Two policy areas were identified to focus on: the Common Agricultural Policy and the European Union Biodiversity Strategy (Biodiversity 2020). Specific actions are planned to help SuperB inform these policies with timely and relevant evidence.

	Full report from the meeting, available here.

North American Pollinator Protection Campaign: Call for Research Proposals Related to Honey Bee Health

	The North American Pollinator Protection Campaign (NAPPC) is seeking proposals for research related to improving the health of honey bees. Proposals should focus on research to manage, suppress, and eradicate Varroa mites, small hive beetles, and other pests, pathogens, and diseases contributing to colony losses. Summaries of previously funded projects can be found at http://pollinator.org/honeybee_health.htm. Review and selection of proposals will be conducted by members of the Honey Bee Health Task Force.

	The NAPPC anticipates supporting several proposals, students and post-doctoral research fellows are encouraged to apply. Funds must be used within a one-year period. Focused, targeted projects with a high likelihood of providing tangible results that can be applied to improving bee health are preferred. Proposals providing valuable extensions of previously funded projects will be considered. Principal investigators of funded projects will be expected to present the results at the 2016 NAPPC meeting. Conference travel and registration costs may be taken from the grant award.

	Priority Areas

	The Honey Bee Health Task Force has identified seven priority areas for funding, though other areas will be considered as well.

 Effects of pathogens and pests on honey bee behavior, physiology and/or colony health; including the development of novel methods to mitigate these effects, such as RNAi technology.

 Effects of nutrition on pest, pathogen, and disease incidence.

 Effects of pesticides on pest, pathogen, and disease incidence.

 Effects of parasite and pathogen spillover from other bee species to honey bees.

 Development of approaches for genetic stock improvement of honey bee populations to enhance resistance to pathogens and parasites.

 Effects of climate or environmental variables on pest, pathogen, and disease incidence.

 The development of diagnostics or indicators for the presence of pests, pathogens and diseases that affect honey bee health, particularly those that can be used by beekeepers.

	More information on how to apply is available here.

	The second annual Super-B meeting in Paola, Malta was a resounding success. It is clear that Super-B is stimulating many new collaborations and activities, within and beyond Europe. You could say it is generating a buzz among pollinator scientists and stakeholders.

	Great progress was made in Malta by all the Working Groups, including a workshop on apple pollination now planned by Working Groups 1 and 2, fantastic progress on a European survey of farmers and beekeepers by Working Group 3, a horizon scan of future issues for pollinators completed and a wild bee pathogen screening study planned by Working Group 4.

	At the end of the project's 5 year research programme STEP published the "Climatic Risk and Distribution Atlas of European Bumblebees" and a Final STEP Brochure, featuring the project's case studies and key findings.

	The atlas, published as a special issue of the open access journal BioRisk, breaks new ground in assessing the risks of climate change for European bumblebees. Climate change has been identified as one of the main threats to this group and the atlas provides the most comprehensive evaluation of the likely consequences this will have.

	A number of additional case studies and key project research findings are included in the final STEP brochure, designed to provide stakeholders a collection of synthesised project results.

Celebrating Pollinator Week 2015

	The Pollinator Partnership announces its signature initiative, Pollinator Week, which has reached significant new milestones in 2015. Established in 2007, Pollinator Week has grown exponentially in scope each year with this year U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack and U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell, proclaiming June 15-23 as Pollinator Week. In an unprecedented act of vision and solidarity, ALL 50 state governors have proclaimed Pollinator Week in their states as a time to celebrate and protect the nation’s pollinating animals (here is a complete list of State proclamations and events).

Pollinators, such as bees, butterflies, birds and other animals bring us one in every three bites of food, protect our environment. They form the underpinnings of a healthy and sustainable future. From Boulder, CO, where four masters of the classical Japanese bamboo flute "tweeted" the premier of original honey-bee themed music to the Honolulu Zoo’s Pollinator Party to tours of underground geothermally protected honey bee hives in Maine – Americans have put their ingenuity, creativity and drive into supporting pollinator health, an issue that they are doing something about!

Efforts during Pollinator Week, and indeed year-round, are working to reverse and prevent pollinator declines caused by loss of habitat, disease, pesticides, parasites and other interconnected assaults on pollinator populations. Laurie Davies Adams, Executive Director of the Pollinator Partnership, said, "It’s appropriate to see the highest levels of government as well as grassroots actions by individuals and communities taking action for pollinators. There are over 130 events taking place around the world for Pollinator Week 2015 - We applaud everyone participating. It’s a great starting point for actions, large and small, that support the future of our pollinators, our food supply, and our environment."

Super-B policy workshop

	Thanks to all those who attended the Super-B policy workshop on Tuesday 3 March. We had a productive day, with hard work and some intense discussions. Luckily, we also managed to have some fun at the end. The main policy opportunities discussed were the Common Agricultural Policy (evaluation and reform) and the European Biodiversity 2020 Strategy. There are clear opportunities for SuperB to feed into these policies. We will follow up with details of when and how.

What policies can support sustainable pollination in Europe?

	The Super-B policy workshop - Policies for Sustainable Pollination in Europe - will take place on Tuesday 3 March 2015, in Brussels. In preparation, we are looking for suggestions of forthcoming policy opportunities to support pollination in urban and rural environments. During the day, we will consider how and when Super-B should present relevant evidence to inform these policies.

	If you are aware of policy opportunities between now and 2019, please contact Lynn Dicks (lvd22@cam.ac.uk). The main focus is at European level, but we are also interested to hear about regional, national or wider international opportunities to develop policy that helps sustain pollination services.

	To find out more about the workshop, click on the Super-B CALENDAR entry, bottom right →

Report from Rome - the first Super-B meeting

	The first Super-B meeting was held in Rome on the 4th and 5th November. As you can see, we met in a beautiful Roman palace, now the home of the FAI, Fedreazione Apicoltori Italiani. 65 scientists attended from more than 31 countries, mostly in Europe, but including Kenya, New Zealand and the USA.

	On the first day, the Dissemination Working Group made plans for our initial policy workshop. This will identify opportunities for evidence and guidance from SuperB to feed into policies being developed at European level between 2015 and 2018. The workshop is set for Tuesday 3 March 2015.

	At the Management Committee meeting we learned that 31 countries are now represented in the network.

	On the second day, Working Groups met to develop work programmes on: the value of pollination, delivering pollination services, mitigating pollination loss and understanding drivers of pollination change. Some exciting workshops, activities and short term visits are planned, including an effort to develop standard monitoring protocols for pollinators and pollination, and a focus on data sharing and access.

We need your vote today for the Super-B Work & Budget Plan!

	The Core Group (chair, vice chair & the WG leaders) finally completed the Super-B Work & Budget plan for year 1. You can read it here. Next, the procedure is as follows:

 With this email, the chair asks all MC members to accept or reject this Work & Budget plan, by mailing your vote to super-b@naturalis.nl .

 Only 1 vote per country! So please agree with the other MC members in your country first, then choose 1 MC member per country who emails the chair what your country decides (that makes it a lot easier for us too!) and cc your fellow country members.

 The deadline for voting is this Sunday, May 31, at Midnight.

 The decision will be based on the majority of votes.

 No answer from your country = you accept.

 If the MC accepts the plan, it will be send to COST next week.

Mark your calendars for the first annual Super-B MC & WG meetings, to be held in Rome, Italy, November 4 and 5, 2014!

	Followed by the Apimondia ApiEcoFlora symposium, which is held at the same location on 6-8 November, the Super-B meetings aim to build and further a vibrant Super-B community by bringing together interested people from science, policy and industry who have a responsibility or interest in the broad field of pollinators and pollination.

	All Super-B members are invited to participate in the meetings, however only MC members can attend the MC meeting, and reimbursements may not cover travel and accommodation completely. More on that and on the conference venue and program in our next newsletter!

	Important caveat: Super-B has not received the COST grant yet. Of course we'll let you know as soon as possible when we do!
